I just had a shoot with Martin Jacobs yesterday. So that's like, yeah, I think my first, like first, big thing. I did it for Heaven.
I come from a music orientated family. My mom sang in the choir at church. My dad is a musician. He plays the guitar. I noticed that every family member on my mom and dad's side either can sing or plays an instrument, and so gradually as I grew as a kid, I always just remember being so obsessed with just music and going to church every day with my mom and my dad. I grew a natural obsession with drums. And so with drums, I didn't really take any lessons or take any classes. I sort of learned by ear. I always, always say that a rhythm runs in the family because, you know, I gradually learned how to play and understand music just by learning by ear. I think people can have music theory, like people can be born with music theory. I think playing by ear and understanding the science of music, just naturally knowing and observing, that's like some type of music theory. And as I got older, I watched an interview with this famous German named Travis Barker. I remember I was like eight years old. And he said, you know, the best way to be the best musician is to learn all genres of music and study them. And I remember ever since then, I was always open minded and passionate about all forms of music. I started just delving into other genres, the history, just become like a real historian within music. I wouldn't say I have any favorites. I mean, obviously, you know, my most listened is probably going to be hip hop. Probably alternative rock and then obviously like R&B, more so 60s through 70s, soul R&B, not so much as the 80s and 90s, but those are probably like my top three most listened genres. I've been in that heavy UK garage phase right now. I go through phases where I listen to straight on certain genres and I've been in a very average, heavy, carriage phase right now.
I was probably like 16 or 17. And this is where , I'm sort of going into a phase where starting to develop my own unique fashion style and going through trial and error. I was in college, my, my first year in college, this was like 2017. And, I had one outfit. It was like a pink thrifted jacket. I found windbreaker, these black pants, and a blue, little crazy button up shirt. And I remember, I got 40 compliments that day. Not 40, I'm over exaggerating, I got like, I got like 9 or 10 compliments from a couple of girls in the school. I was walking around and some guys, you know, they were saying like, "wow, you know, your, your style is like very, very unique." That's the first moment, I guess. Where I was like, "wow, could get more of that. " Like, I want to do, I want to get more of those type of reactions, not just in my college community college, but on the internet in the world in general. I guess you could say I want to be a style icon. I wanted to be with the popular kids. I wanted to do all this.
Usually the people that have great taste in music always want to have great taste in style. I feel like the inner swamp with music and fashion and art in general is that it all comes down to taste. Um, if you have good taste in, in fashion, you're probably gonna have good taste in music. And if somebody has like very good taste and a very good perspective on music, they're probably going to have a very good taste on fashion. As a kid growing up, I couldn't really watch a certain artist if they didn't look cool to me. I was always heavy on just style and looking cool and expression and stuff like that. And all the people I look at, look at on music, you know, they, they always had genuine, good style. Michael Jackson had a fit when I was 6 years old, his 30th anniversary. He was wearing this all white astronaut suit. And that was the coolest thing ever to me. And that right there was like, you know, me having an eye just for style, like genuine style, just looking cool, being individuality. I knew who to look at. I knew who to go to, I knew how to get the information.
I don't have to explain my fashion style. I don't, I'm not gonna say I don't know. I like, I like people to tell me, I like, I like the audience to tell me, to tell me what they get from me. I think fashion, when you go out, it's, it's performance art anyway. It also came to a point where I do want to be remembered. I do want to step in a room and have full on attention. Um, I think that comes with being a creative. When you're creative people, you, you love attention. It's just natural when you create, you want people to see what you're doing, when you want people to like what you're doing. I will say I dress and impress myself and I want to impress others. I want to have people say, "wow, that was like one of the best outfits I've ever seen. Who is that guy?" Fashion emphasizes who I am. The first thing people notice when they see somebody is what they're wearing, the first thing you notice is what they're wearing and how it fits on that person. I may view music is the way I may approach acting. I think with music and fashion and even wearing an outfit, it's, it's all performance.
It's all, It's all performing and putting on an act. Sometimes that act is probably reality. Sometimes it may be like it's reality mixed with a little imagination, but I think, yeah, it's for the most part, it's, it's all, it's all presentation. I'm putting on a show. I think I'm putting on a show with, with everything I do. I wanted to toggle every audience, every crowd. I wanted to be able to be a chameleon. I wanted to be able to go to every single audience and they like what I have to present. So yeah, I think about the audience all the time.
